Job Description:


Under close supervision, this position is responsible for financial customer service, researching tax liabilities, collecting unpaid taxes, and initiating enforced collection activities. Duties include corresponding with taxpayers, their representatives, banking institutions, and court offices, by mail, phone, and in person. Incumbents are expected to develop high levels of computer research skills, customer service skills, analytical skills, and independent judgment. May perform field assignments in a multiple-county area interacting with taxpayers, performing investigations, and taking enforcement action. PENDING VALIDATION


Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards:

1.
Checks forms to verify taxpayer data, and ensures that supporting documentation is correctly computed and complete
2.
Collects taxes from individuals or businesses according to prescribed laws and regulations
4. Advises taxpayers and/or their representatives of legal basis for assessments, refunds, or credits.
3.
Confers with taxpayers or their representatives to discuss or explain routine issues, laws, and regulations involved in returns/claims and to resolve related problems
3. Determines compliance or non-compliance with applicable tax laws, rules, and regulations.
4. Calculates correct penalties, interest, and liabilities and makes necessary adjustments on the computer system.
5. Creates credits for refunds or assessments for additional taxes due when necessary.

Creates, updates, audits, and/or maintains records, documents and databases with taxpayer information
5.
Examines and processes tax documents within area of assignment
6. Uses proper function codes to reject returns when additional information or adjustments are necessary to complete processing.

May coordinate with outside units or Departmental authorities to ensure accurate assessment, adjustment and crediting of taxpayer accounts
7.
Monitors claims, requests, returns and payments to insure timely processing and compliance with agency, state and federal laws
4. Bases determinations as to whether to allow credits on knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations, Departmental policies and procedures, the Attorney General's Opinions, and other related facts as they apply to Individual Income Tax returns.
5. If credits, Social Security Numbers, names, and addresses are correct, then accounts will cycle off the list in 10 days and refunds will be issued.
6. If credits are incorrect, accounts will be rejected and those requesting them will be notified. If correct credits were generated by the system, necessary account corrections must be made in order to produce credits for correct amounts.

Performs computer research or basic investigation to gather additional data

Knowledge of delinquent tax collection

Entry Qualifications:

One year of related experience OR Associate degree in accounting, bookkeeping or related area


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in the use of computer hardware and software
