Remember all the disturbing corporate scandals resulting in loss of retirement income and investment savings of the employees? Not to worry. Georgia offers a defined contribution benefit plan, the preferred choice, to state employees based on years of service and salary. The longer employees work for the State, after becoming vested, the higher their retirement. Under Georgia’s defined contribution retirement plan employees assume no investment risk, making retirement stable, safe and secure. Plus, a portion of the retirement contribution is used to purchase Group Term Life Insurance. If employees are under age 60, life insurance coverage is equal to 18 times the monthly salary. If employees are age 60 or older, base insurance freezes at 18 times the monthly salary at age 60.

Regulated by Congress,  deferred compensation/defined contribution  plans allow employees to put aside a portion of  their pay before State or Federal income taxes are deducted. There are 17 mutual funds that provide a broad range of investment styles (also called "asset classes"), including growth and value stocks; small, medium and large company stocks; and combinations of stocks and bonds. The Plan further offers a stable value option (the Fixed Income Option) that provides a guaranteed rate of return and does not invest in the stock market.
